Orlando Voorn

Nice & Nasty
NANO161 | 2018-03-26
Under the alias Basic Bastard, Fix and The Stalker or via labels such as Night Vision, Rush hour, R&S and KMS, Orland Voorn is one of the elite DJ/Producers in techno and whether it be Detroit Techno, Funky House or Electro, he is a master of the creating dance music and a perfect fit for Nice & Nasty.

As one of the first Dutch musicians to build a connection between Detroit and Amsterdam, Orlando Voorn has long been recognized as one of the Holland's most original and inventive producers in the world of electronic dance music.

At the tender age of 12 he went on to win the Dutch DMC DJ Championships in 1986 with his own characteristic blend of hiphop and electro but by the 1990s he caight the acid house bug and fused his hip hop with house and techno and BOOM!

After early releases and seminal tracks on Dutch and Belgian labels, Voorn began to work with Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Blake Baxter; however, whilst Voorn is undoubtedly part of the Detroit masters he mimself considers himself akin to the likes of Squarepusher, Amon Tobin, and Photek, using drum'n'bass rhythms to create something beyond pure dance music.

With his latest release for his Irish family, Nice & Nasty, Voorn drops an old school bleeptastic dancefloor tune in Audio Unit: Phase one that owes as much to Sheffield, UK as it does Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Detroit whilst Strings for Today is a simple homage to the high tech soul of motor city. Together they capture the techno genius of Voorn and offer the listener a peak into his soul.

'Audio Unit:Phase 1' brings the smile and makes one notice why it's so good to have long time veterans on your side. This track is the way Techno should be, if you praise the origins: funky, funky, funky with a bit of bleep. Think Forgemasters, LFO and Uniqe 3 back in the day but still very relevant for today.

'Strings of today' is a simple a homage to the Rhythim is Rhythim anthem and you'd wish it was the trend in today's Techno scene: the progression, the 'less is more' philosophy of channel build-up and the the thumping kick to get the body jackin'.

Like Nice & Nasty, Orland Voorn is having a renaissance right now as both these techno veterans (OV is a legend to be fair) get into their groove and show the new kids just what experience can offer.

Is it possible to clone Orlando Voorn? If anyone of you out there knows how, please get in contact.
