Plus Plus is back with our final release of the year, with Juni Staub back at the helm. Juni’s “Shogun Dawn” EP is a collection of dubbed out grooves with a grip of remixes to balance out the release. From the more house sensible remixes from James Reid and Jason Bay to some more dance floor focused vibes provided by label new comer Mike Brankis and fan fav Raul Garcia teaming up with Nicolas Recalde.
Juni Staub’s Downtown Lullabies opens the EP and was featured earlier this year on our summer compilation. Smooth chords create a relaxed environment with spacious and crisp drums nestling in the background. A subby bass sits underneath to fill the space and give it some body while adding a little skip to groove.
Krafting is up next, with a heavy kick leading the track and some sharp, staccato perks driving the track forward. Loopy chords come in, swinging back and forth from side to side, filling the top space while a throbbing bassline creates the tension of the track. The tension keeps building with shakers pushing the energy forward but Krafting never gives into the expected release, just leaves you wanting more and more from the tracks to follow.
The EP’s namesake, Shogun Dawn opens with buttery pads that sit above the crisp drums that is quickly becoming Juni’s signature sound. A rolling bassline comes in, creating a solid foundation and bed that rumbles your chest but never knocks you over. Very reminiscent of that original West Coast house sound with the techy drums complimenting that warm chords and baselines.
Think Twice opens up with a broken kick and a thick bassline that us layered underneath to add some boom and girth. The drums keep building with percussion inspired by minimal techno ala short, sharp percs and a tight snare. The rhythmic synths counter balance the drums, to create a track that pushes and pulls you from start to finish.
Label head Jason Bay opens up the remix round with his interpretation of Downtown Lullabies. Holding onto the vocals and woodblocks from the original, Jason builds the remix off the back of the punchy bassline and the driving chords. Jason plays with the filter cutoff on the pad to build excitement during the breaks and beyond.
Raul Garcia & Nicolas Recalde team tag on Krafting. Raul & Nicolas go for a less is more approach on this one, with a heavy driving kick pushing the track and subtle throbbing bass underneath to add a bit of funk to the low end groove. And LFO controlled synth comes in half way to add a touch of late night nocturnal energy to the track, only to vanish as soon as it arrived leaving the track to its own machinations.
Label new comer Mike Brankis shows off his stripped down, analog inspired signature sound with his remix of Shogun Dawn. A barebones drum groove opens with a tight kick and a low, mechanical off beat percussion march the track forward while sharp, punchy chords keep accent the groove. Long, filtered strings build half way through, the filter opening and the strings get more cinematic and emotive before the drums and bass come back to finish off the track.
James Reid finishes off the EP with his remix of Think Twice. James signature sound shines through once more on this one, with a laid back drum groove staining front and center. Chords from the original move punctuate the arrangement while sustained string hang underneath to build tension. The bassline adds a touch of subtle funk to the remix, lazily playing off the kick to accentuate the laid back groove of the drums.
