Chordlust - Function Call Remixes represents a group effort by some of Calgary’s most active producers to create tracks that stand out and are set apart through character, nostalgia, and energy in equal parts.

Since Chordlust’s End of Line release on Substation Recordings, this producer has continued to define his sound as simple, compelling dance music which cuts through to listeners base emotions and strikes hard physically on the dancefloor. With this follow-up release, he marks his return with a strong original offering as well as several remixes by unique and likeminded artists.

Rather than opting for the standard bass-heavy model sometimes common in the genre, Chordlust chooses to recall and work with elements more likely found in techno’s formative years that, while distinct, arguably gave it more crossover appeal across sets incorporating other genres at that time. An uptempo track with soulful chord stabs, vocal samples, and playful shuffling hi-hat pattern variations accompany a deep four to the floor kick, while subtle splashes of acid interject to add an extra layer of flair. This track delivers its intentions effortlessly without any interference, complexities or distractions.

Mark Adam’s remix should find play among other works across several different genres staying true to the diversity and inspiration drawn from his well-documented influences. He takes Function Call down a dark, dense, dubby, and percussive avenue that shifts the chord structure into a raucous progression, packaging a peak hour track from selected components of the original.

This EP marks the first appearance by The Accountant on Substation Recordings, and his work to reimagine this track from the ground up shows why he is a figure to watch in Calgary. His remix effectively veers into the realm of deep house with a soulful bassline, uplifting atmosphere, and familiar chord structure transformed into airy bells.

Marco Cardoza returns to the label supplying a remix which deftly succeeds in refocusing the track toward his own brand of no-nonsense club oriented techno. Along with a classic jack-beat the synth stabs are stripped down and sped up, creating a frenzied atmosphere sure to find a home in late-hour club and warehouse sets.

Like many of Substation’s releases, Chordlust - Function Call Remixes showcases the true building blocks of influential eras and genres with a fresh interpretation on classic fundamentals by open minds.
