A departure project for me into the world of modular synthesis and sounds. After re-building my studio for the 3rd time a new angle was approached. Moving away from just sampled sounds I decided to focus on something a little different.
Hooking up online with colleagues who were also inspired by modular synthesis and what could be created I decided to build a modular rack. Initially the plan was just for a few modules but has since exploded into a huge rack. The aim was to create my own sounds from scratch and incorporate this into the existing Mindlab sound library and studio. I learnt a hell of a lot along the way and still learning (and experimenting) sound design and what the possibilities are. Modular synths have made a bit of a comeback of late. I also plan to incorporate this into HipHop. What do we call it? ModBap (coined by Corry BeatPPL), SynthBap, ModularSoul, SynthHop or plain modern Electro? There will be elements of everything in here so I plan to vary the tempo to explore all of the possibilities.

Each track was recorded in one take to give it that live mix feel. I had this project in my mind and thought that it would be best conveyed spontaneously as a Modular DJ set. Just to get the feel of the transitions.

Anyway this project is my early experimentation with incorporating modular synthesis. As I said, not even close to being an expert in this field but have always enjoyed unusual sounds. Hope that you enjoy!

The Space element came to me while sitting in the lab messing around with the Modular rig. The sounds that I had created felt more like something out of a Sci Fi film. Also while round at my sisters chatting I played them the live version that was recorded at the May 2017 CV FREQ Event. Now this music is an extreme departure for them and they said that the tracks "sounded like the aliens were talking!” So after that I felt the Extra Terrestrial space theme really did suit the project. So there you have it. My first recorded Modular Synthesis album!
