Chinawhite EP

Hux (Huxley)

Do Not Sleep
DNS010 | 2017-04-24
Huxley debuts his Hux alias with the first of two EPs for Do Not Sleep, an imprint that’s generated a solid rep for dropping airtight and weighty grooves.

Offering up two originals and two remixes from Christian Burkhardt and Harvard Bass, the ‘Chinawhite' EP sees Huxley return to his nimble house roots.

With the title track we’re treated to a classic, shuffling house groove reminiscent of early Huxley outings while a slightly discordant riff counterpoints deeper pads and a ‘Don’t Stop’ vocal refrain creates a memorable but trippy cut. These themes continue into ‘Clumsy’, an acid driven track that displays a slightly more muscular tone but shares the haunting vibes of it’s counterpart.

Influenced and enthused by Hux’s use of ethereal soundscapes, Christian Burkhardt’s remix follows suit, exaggerating these techniques whilst cutting the vocal sampling for a simplified sound. Turbo’s Harvard Bass on the other hand clears the pads to make way for a walking bassline and rolling percussion, injecting layers of kooky vocal samples to create a remix that pulls away from the original in feel.

Hux’s controlled attitude and fine-tuned techniques have created an EP that flows continuously, stretching each component to its fullest. Finding the sweet spot between celestial pads, pitch bends and strong kicks, Hux offers a thought provoking selection of sounds, which are guaranteed to move the feet.
