Marco Carola?s string of recent releases on Plus8 and his own 2M imprint are now effortlessly hurtling forward under the weight of their own momentum and the Bloody Cash EP shows no sign of relenting. In fact if it?s possible, this collection of four new combustible tunes adds another dimension to his already substantial repertoire.
On the title track Bloody Cash, Carola immediately shows his intent, letting fly with a spiraling tribal groove full of bright, crisp percussive elements that stretch skywards towards the sun. The tough, earthy beats keep everything rooted to the ground as he taps into some age-old hedonistic urge, creating a universal groove that rolls out across the oceans before breaking on the shores of each continent with an all encompassing call to dance. The main body of the track incorporates a straight synth stab doused in reverb that sets the scene for the finely crafted main keyboard riff, which is an accomplishment in itself. Alternating between two complimentary parts, it elevates the backing track to another level. Perfectly balanced and enhanced for maximum danceability, it?s without doubt one of Carola?s finest works to date.
Sirens occupies an altogether different headspace, kicking off with broken electronic rhythms and chirping effects before the kick and bass lock everything down. Carola then embellishes the loose groove with rolling snares, more ethnic percussion and embedded rhythmic synthlines before juxtaposing the rushing beats with a crunchy, electrotinged breakdown that recalls Kraftwerk?s Numbers. Each time the groove kicks back in it?s with renewed ferocity courtesy of a cascading deep space filter that works as a foil to the morphing sub bass structures below.
The first of the two digital only tracks, Pampero starts with a classic Carola bassline. Playful and tactile, it offers the DJ maximum leeway to chop and change the beats as the mechanical groove patiently constructs. Carola occasionally strips back certain elements to bringing others discreetly to the fore while a hi-end tom pattern continually entices the dancer forward. Pampero is the kind of easy-going track where you end up making new acquaintances on the dancefloor, working perfectly as a mixing tool or bridge track to diffuse the surrounding intensity and allow the crowd to refuel. On Long Jump Carola returns to the territory he recently explored on the massive Jackpot (Plus8097). The strutting groove is embellished with subtle clicks and pops before a gradually intensifying regimental organ leads us into a cavernous breakdown dripping with reverb. Carola brings the beat back without overdoing the drama before leading out with a bonus beat section that?s ripe for more inventive mixing.
