I'm a jammy bastard! This is one of only 30 promos in circulation and let me just tell you before we get started, the record's scarcity has nothing to do with the props bestowed on this track. Regular readers of the reviews here will be aware that sometimes I talk about garage records that are tailor-made for the soul scene, the sub genre born out of northern soul all-nighters. Over the years the flava has changed in these second rooms at the all-nighters - funky 70s shit back in the 70s via the Mecca scene, two-step, mid tempo soul, and later r&b flavoured material became popular on the scene. Now garage is the big thing, but it has to be very, very soulful. The last thing we want is the scene being ruined by DJs that drop main room house, a la Defected Records, Subliminal and Peppermint Jam - all great labels in the correct environment, but not for the highly critical modern fans. The pace here is meandering and chilled to the core with its soothing well-mannered percussion that is calm and collected throughout. An organ respects the percussive persona and buries fat 'n' chunky gentle stabs into the picture, that in turn is brushed all over the place by wonderful, soulful vocal strokes from Watts. A lead guitar is strummed and plucked in places, the wah wah pedal is clicked on or off here and there also as the guitarist free-styles with a multitude of little fills. This is about as perfect as it gets for modern soul/garage crossover material and it's hats off to Seattle based lad Laurence. So if you feel this I suggest you start checking out some of the modern rooms at venues such as the Prestwhich and Blackburn all-nighters, where up to 2,500 people are getting down to proper garage and house music goes back underground." 4.5/5 SUREPLAYER (Yogi Haughton, DJ Magazine)
