Sweaty Disco Balls

Stone Owl

Thoughtless Music
TLM094 | 2014-05-26
Detroit's occultist duo return to the Thoughtless dance floor with a trio of fresh jams that focus their hometown sound through a dusty disco lens. Retaining the minimalist strategies of their earlier success, they turn up the funk factor on the title track, brittle after hours charm wafting through the cavernous spaces carved out by its monumental bass line. Fellow Detroit duo Ataxia deliver a stomping rework that reinforces melodic elements of the original with expansive organs and distant horns; Toronto's Murr chimes in with a stripped-down dub that folds itself inside out with hypnotic appeal; and Keith Kemp's Zoner Mix is about as raw as Detroit gets, classic drum machines drifting in and out atop a tidal bass pulse. CBD is a return to Stone Owl's sound design trickery, otherworldly noises poking their heads through the occasional nooks and crannies afforded by a winding low-end and tight percussion. Finally, the lilting analog harmonies of Seven Sisters provide a welcome counterpoint to the title track, and a fittingly wistful close to the affair. Highlighting the diversity of their influences and versatility in the studio, Stone Owl shows their one true motive is making people sweat...
