THIS IS HOUSE
(ESSENCE)
DJ Pierre is back on top of his game, going back to the days when house meant totally losing it at the legendary Music Box, getting lost in the music & just letting it completely blow you away. On This Is House DJ Pierre gets his old Chicago note book out, working up a very successful tried & tested formula, whilst name checking a load of very influential pioneers, leading up to his trademark acid / wild pitch rhythms & sounds. Although This Is House is done in a late 80s style, it sounds completely fresh & one step ahead of the pack.

There is definitely something afoot! I mentioned in issue no.87/vol3 of DJmag that there was a new road being built, and the route is heading towards Chicago and acid house music once again. But with new building materials available, we get little differences in the musical scenery along the way. Take Pierre's Original Mix here, which flirts with acid and filter house alike. The butch vocal style and lyrical content is pure Hot Mix 5, but younger house heads will have no problem understanding the vocal style within this old skool and 2005 musical mash up. The Old Skool Mix finds Pierre harking back to his Chicago roots with even more commitment. The beats are so late 80s, as are the cymbal splashes and the namechecks that salute luminaries from that era also. Names such as Ron Hardy, Knuckles and Tony Humphries are proudly shouted out. This mix is real grindy and grungy; listen out for the bellowing female vocal that leaves us longing for more of her druggy call to the dancefloor. Memories of Eat My Pussy, The Poke, 1've Got A Big Dick and Slam are flooding back. There now, that should stop any toys being thrown out of Pierre's pram. (YH) DJ Magazine

Well, if anyone's qualified to tell us what 'house' is then I guess it's DJ pierre! Out as a trailer for Essence%u2019s rather lovely comp (review to follow next month), this is a gloriously old-skool sounding spoken-vocalled number in Original and er, Old Skool mixes. And it rocks. Namechecking the founding fathers of house music and on the Old Skool mix burning the bassline from Ma Foom Bey. Like a companion to Blaze's Remember House, this is proper floor-rockin' bizniss.
