VEST029 // FJ9 – Glimpses of Hope EP
This 29th label release features the first multi-track EP from Chicago-based melodic tech / progressive ninja: FJ9. Glimpses of Hope is a sterling trio of timeless songs, curated and packaged together to make an artistic statement. These three songs assembled represent a culmination of sounds, showcasing a few different sides of this vibrant young artist.
The first track, "1917", is a powerful composition, co-written by FJ9 and good friend, collaborator, and fellow Chicago-based artist - Sol Echo. It's engineered for a dancefloor, where it's already caused quite a bit of beautiful damage in it's pre-release test phase. Tried and true, this song is a juxtaposition of driving / aggressive / gritty up against emotive and melodic. Analog synthwork fills the sound spectrum, garnished with a lovely minimalist crisp and clean arrangement, and supporting the theory of less being more, if you learn to do a lot more with less. This one is a weapon, you've been warned.
Next, the title track "Glimpses of Hope" is an emotionally-charged crux musical artifact, nostalgic songscape, and piece of sonic storytelling. This cinematic journey is inspired by the human experience in its evolution, and its deep evolving score is an exploration of emotions tied to memories. The fluid percussion and melodic development in this piece make it perfect for early evening and well-chosen closing moments alike. And frankly, it feels like it should be played at openair sunset.
Lastly, "UandMe" rounds things out on this EP with a UK Garage-inspired melodic tribute to relationships and joys and inspirations they bring. Deep and emotive themes with a change-up twist really stir things up in a positive way on this tune – driven home by delicate broken beat arrangements adorned by warm analog soundscapes and lush melodics. Truly a dreamy slice of sonic bliss.
Music is (and always will be) the great unifier, and as we all navigate these crazy times, uplifting and timeless dance grooves like these will continue to literally provide us with glimpses of hope.
