Australian firebrand Gumm returns to TAU with his first full EP. Gumm arrived on Planet TAU with ‘Heroes Call’ on Spektrum 4 in 2023, and it’s great to have him back. The Melbourne-based artist has been building a solid rep with releases on Buttress, Bordello A Parigi, Midnight Operators and Ombra International in recent years. His sound is perfectly aligned with TAU’s ethos, blending house influences with future-retro funk and melodic elements. On Don’t DJ, he delivers two original cuts, accompanied by a remix from Sam Shure.

‘Don’t DJ’ sets things off with cantankerous drums ushering in a swirl of spinetingling sounds, increasing with intensity as the intro progresses. When the track hits its stride, we get a Brazilian-sounding vocal which provides the main motif, as the low end pumps and Gumm builds the energy. A breakdown takes us into the main body of the track with a funked up bassline and high energy, laser-esque FX. The main breakdown warps and stutters the vocal to great effect, leading into a frenetic final chapter full of vigour.

Next up is ‘Shuffer’, a dark brooding cut with a menacing b-line. The percussion is tight with a hint of groove permeating through- out. Gumm pumps up the low end when the track gets rolling, a jaunty melody complements the bass and a repeated vocal clip enters the fray, adding a hypnotic element. Gumm skillfully shifts the arrangement, playing with the energy until we hit a breakdown, which unleashes the track’s full force. Epic.

Finally, Sam Shure steps in to remix ‘Don’t DJ’, adding his sonic fingerprint to the release. His interpretation utilises a groovy bassline with razor sharp beats, interspersed with the catchy vocal throughout. Sam employs the vocal for key energetic bursts, and transitions, leading us into a powerful breakdown. In the second part of the track we enter full on party mode, with the bass, beats and vocals coalescing to give us a large dose of high-energy vibes.
