Directly on the heels of his Ethan Borshansky remix and recent releases for Faded and Soundzrise, Toronto native Brian Johnson drops his first EP for Thoughtless with All of the Time. Featuring rugged house rhythms and a refreshingly non-linear approach to arrangement, Johnson's distinctly modern yet organic tracks are rough in all the right places and smooth where it counts the most. The title track's vocal refrain washes spaciously over remodeled disco bass, while subtle atmospheres and effects maintain a compelling dynamic throughout. Highgrade founder and Berlin legend Tom Clark turns in an immersive acid house retake that submerges the signature vocals in an aquarium of hypnotic synth lines and expansive reverb. Hailing from the highest altitudes of Colorado, Oban unapologetically strip things down for their sound design oriented remix, while Platypus makes his Thoughtless debut with a crafty breakbeat interpretation which takes cues from 2-step and Detroit electro while remaining compatible with a wide range of techno
and house. Thought Pattern is a further exploration of Johnson's unique style, cutting a bass-driven path through dense terrain woven tight with seemingly disparate samples and textures that nevertheless emerge to form a coherent sonic ecology bursting with life. Closing out with the melancholic synth lines of Champion Sound, Johnson shows a touch for the subtly cinematic, offering deep house with a wide vista. Arriving on the scene with a mature sound entirely his own, Brian Johnson is clearly focused on his music most, if not all, of the time...
