Armand Van Helden's Hardhead probably marks the pinnacle of his excursions into experimental hard house. Only two releases grace the moniker but where the first, New York Express, still accedes to the dancefloor demands of club DJs, Demon Dreams is much the more difficult proposition; the leading A side Hell Raisin' mix is a minimal, horror-movie soundtrack inspired journey into sound effects, snares and echoed voiceovers. Relief comes with the equally minimal but more rhythmically anchored GraveDiggin mix. It's a long, long way from here to Duck Sauce.
