The fledgling Saints & Sonnets imprint pushes forward this June with its seventh single, a four tracker from hotly tipped production outfit SecondCity. Second City burst onto the radar of the UK and worldwide electronic music scene in the midst of the 90’s house resurgence, dropping the explosive ‘Feel’, in late 2012, which aired on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show, and saw support from the likes of Disclosure, Eats Everything and Huxley. The latter is one half of the brains behind the Saints & Sonnets imprint alongside Jimmy Posters, where the producers have opted to drop their latest EP, joining Detroit Swindle, JammHot, and Annie Errez on the roster. The single opens with title track ‘The Story’, a garage tinged house workout with intricately, filtered and chopped vocal licks, warm, blooming pad lines and a bouncy, playful bass hook. ‘What Love’ follows, skillfully blending organic strings and organ tones with raw shuffled drums and elongated sub-bass tones to create a classic meets contemporary, peak-time slow bloomer. Entering the later stages of the EP we have ‘Those Days’, embracing a more direct deep house aesthetic this time, with straight 4/4, 909 drum programming, acidic tones and cosseting chord progressions, brilliantly showcasing Second City’s diverse ability to craft retro inspired, and forward thinking workouts alike. The closer of the release ‘My House’ definitely being a look forward, blending an amalgamation of pulsating dub bass- lines, resonating pads, warm Rhodes and heavily manipulated vocal snippets, resulting in an astoundingly on- point cut for summer dance floors.
