With Ibiza just around the corner, Defected are proud to have picked up Rachel Row’s much hyped breakthrough record ‘Follow the Step’; a momentous track with equally impressive remixes that are set to become summer global dance floor anthems.
The original cut is an exquisite work of art and cements Row’s reputation as an outstanding emerging talent. This collaboration with fellow Bulgarian native KiNK delivers an intelligent and innovative composition, fusing poignantly evocative melodies, yearning lyrics of love and vocals that can only be described as liquid gold, resonating deeply and evoking a lingering sense of melancholic harmony. Set against a refreshing back drop of down tempo 90’s rave-esque broken beats and haunting instrumentation, its flawless production provides a structure that simply begs for remixing.
The ‘KiNK Beat Mix’ is a wonderfully skilful and up tempo reworking, cleverly adding another dimension to every element of the original’s framework. The chopping up and distortion of the vocals, the elongation of the chords and the addition of another layer of textured rhythms, paired with distinctively playful and futuristic synths, does the original justice without question.
In contrast his ‘KiNK Remix’ is a more emotionally loaded offering a far cry from what is associated with his more typical output affirming his multi-faceted production skills. Allowing for the captivating melody and vocals to take hold this time, this adaptation is characterised by its nonchalant flow and reverie like qualities.
Meanwhile Justin Martin, whilst retaining elements of the original’s melodies, ingeniously manipulates the vocals and rhythms and adds a raw, signature, Dirtybird bass, the result being a wholly original and unmistakably Martin offering. Trikk then completes the package; the sidelining of the vocal and foregrounding of his decidedly 4/4 beat and old school vibes making it a more obvious dance floor cut.
