M.J. White - Heal the Land EP (REP009)

1. Heal the Land (Steven Garcia's Detox Mix)
2. Heal the Land (Steven Garcia's Tiger Balm Soul Mix)
3. Heal the Land (Steven Garcia's Tiger Balm Instrumental)

Republic's ninth release is a very special one, because it demonstrates the holistic impact of house music with a fully realized vision. New York-based vocalist, songwriter and soul man extraordinaire M.J. White joins forces with Republic's Steven Garcia's for a two-faceted release in which advanced sonic science combines with House's natural social consciousness and spirituality.

On "Heal the Land", White's stirring vocals - part wailing soul, part incantation - form a prayer that his fellow human beings will wake up and realize their connection to nature and to each other before darkness and destruction overtake us. Garcia's luminous production paints a cinematic portrait of struggle and redemption. The Detox Mix is a high-tech soul epic, with swooping keys, gliding synth strings and dramatic breakdowns that give a nod to Detroit's true dance music heroes. The Tiger Balm Soul Mix is a moodier deep-house workout with a relentless bassline and shivering arpeggiated keys. Truly a deep and suductive gem.

White is often compared to house pioneer Robert Owens, thanks to the melancholy sweetness of his jazzy, freeform vocals and the uncompromising quality of his songwriting. When his stylings are fused with Garcia's complex instrumentals, the connection makes even more sense; it's a brilliant revival of the true-school spirit; a reminder that House was not only meant to be dance music but a new kind of electronic soul. Call it roots music for the contemporary age. RESPECT!!!
