Selville has a knack for exposing virtuosic, experimental electronic music. Lunga SA—born, bred in Mokopane, and now holding it down in Johannesburg—is a familiar member of our family. Though audacious dance music is thick on South African streets.Azanian, is Lunga's first full-length and Selville's latest album project, takes all that house, synths, kwaito, and refines, expands, updates, and scrambles it. It's an ambitious and deviously entertaining record, the fulfillment of Lunga's desire to make anything but another contemporary house music album. At any given moment, Azanian feels like it could have been recorded at a kwaito pup somewhere in Soweto in the '90s and back in 2020 with deep techy synths. The record is heavy on sounds he played himself, from drums and fat synth melodies. For features, Lunga enlisted one of the pioneers of South African house music Dr. Duda and talented vocalist Mthandazo Gatya, Muhulu Rakhivhane, Nicky Deep, and OKAY GOD who set the mood with a harmonic intro. On cuts like "Where It All Began" Lunga takes us back to the ’90s and pays tribute to Kwaito. But Azanina can take you down memory lane and take you back to the present time with some deep tech—a playful listen that sinks in.Distributed by Label Engine - www.label-engine.com
