(Who Knows) Where Love Goes EP

Last Magpie

Hypercolour
HYPEDIGI23 | 2012-09-24
After a well-received outing on sister label Losing Suki, fast rising Leeds producer Last Magpie now steps up for a release on Hypercolour. The man behind the moniker has a number of musical projects on the go, with this one being of a deep house and garage focus. Maya Jane Coles picked up his last effort 'No More Stories' for her DJ Kicks mix, (also cited by Phillip Sherburne on SPIN as one of the top 50 tracks of 2012, already) and the title track from this EP is likely to be even bigger!! ‘Who Knows Where (Love Goes)’ is one of those records that just works. Simple, emotive and hugely standout, it takes an airy old vocal and lays it over ticking beats and bass as harmonic synths ring out and melancholic chords weigh the whole thing down in a puddle of beautiful introspection. It’s already getting hammered left right and centre and, like all of the EP, is doused in a neo-Balearic soul – not unsurprising given that Last Magpie is currently living in Ibiza. The rest of the EP follows in similarly impressive style. ‘Pilau Rice’ is marbled with crowd noises and background voices as warm, loose deep house beats roll uninterrupted below. Dubby chords fill in the spaces and a grinding bassline and raw congas add some grit. ‘Don’t Know Why’ is the laziest and most blissed out of the lot. Characterised again by bursts of raw pianos, a garagey bassline and another cute, veiled vocal, it’s deceptively simple yet loveably catchy. ‘Club Whore’ is the most garage leaning of the lot where heavy, slapping claps and buried, booming sub bass off-set a light percussive skip to great effect. Yet again Hypercolour seem to be nurturing the rise of a formerly unknown producer into the big time.
