Crux

D.Vices

Woodwork Recordings
WOOD098 | 2021-09-24
Portland's D.Vices presents a 3-track electro and tech breaks platter for his first Woodwork outing. Each track has its own distinct vibe and feel, indicative of the wide playing field Jack Coleman chooses to explore. It was only fitting to get a diverse set of remixers to give each one a unique perspective and characteristic treatment.

Crux is a deep, punchy heater that straddles the electro and techno realms, with an angled rhythm pounding against delicate stabs and hits, all consumed by growling bass.

Vibrations, which features some collaborative input from Jack's son and fellow Portland producer Gadgetz, is anthemic electro, with its featured vocoder hook, sturdy bass line, and prominent melodies. Pablo Splice chooses to keep the core elements intact but dresses them in sleek style for his 'date nite makeover' remix.

Ventilate defies any straightforward classification, but draws noticeably from classic rave beats and style with classic techno poly-rhythmic synth work. It balances both dark and euphoric moods with undeniable finesse, leaving a wide range of mix options. Replicants took a more extreme angle redoing this one. The groove and tempo implode to a half time break feel... perhaps an abstract lo fi hip hop retro wave crossover experiment... unusual and uniquely effective. Jonah K brings a fusion of jungle, deep dub and UK bass approaches to their version, twisting up the breaks and turning the original themes on edge to great effect.

This entire venture provides a cross-section of thematic vibes and versions that overturns the expected and expands the perception of stylistic possibilities.
