Future Alliance Feat. Jimmy Ori

Future Alliance Records
FAR002 | 2021-06-04
This a collection of Instrumental tracks recorded by Jimmy Ori and Kimon Webster.

When we weren't recording other artists and experimenting with vocals, there was always the ability for Jimmy's guitar to do the talking. These songs were recorded between 2004 and 2008, as part of at least 5 instrumental albums we did over the years. Some are processed using the computer, but most are recorded through an old analogue mixer. Which I feel gives a much warmer sound.

Jimmy and I first started working together in 1999, recording very low quality copies using live sequencing on Yamaha W7 and a microphone. This influenced me when I did finally make the transition to a computer. With Jimmy always ready to work on something new, we got used to doing a lot of recording.

I was influenced at young age by Nigerian singers such as King Sunni Ade and Youssou N'Dour, who always incorporated a high degree of drums, the djembe and talking drums. Producing these complex rhythm patterns that weren’t the same as the music you hear on the radio. Trying to construct these types of beats seemed to move the songs we were doing on to the next stage, where often Jimmy would take over making sure it was catching with his guitar. And reflecting the surroundings of modern Johannesburg, as well as Jimmy's Mozambican roots and his royal heritage.

Listening to his guitar playing over the years, each track tells a story of its own. While the music often consisted of loops, the guitar was carefully crafted to be ever changing. In a track like Cape to Cairo (Let's be together) the tempo differs at different times in the track, with the guitar fitting perfectly through the changes. Something modern musicians should do more of. But it is also a product of playing live.
