On ‘Genki’ Belgian-Japanese artist Aili and one of Eskimo Recordings' most exciting new Belgian electronica acts Transistorcake bring back those Motorik rhythms we loved so much on their debut single ‘Dansu’. This time accompanied by mesmerising synths and another writhing, hypnotic acid melody all punctuated by Aili’s vocals, composed entirely from gairaigo, English ‘loan words’ that have entered the Japanese language.

“I left Tokyo for Belgium when I was 7 years old and in many ways my Japanese stayed at that level. When I sing in Japanese it puts me into this naive, almost childlike mindset that allows me to express what I feel right away. You don’t need to understand the words just the feeling that they convey.”

For her debut EP, ‘Dansu’ Aili joined forces with Transistorcake, the pair working through lockdown to produce a wonderfully fresh sounding 5 track release on Eskimo Recordings. Effortlessly bringing together elements of Kosmiche Musik, Acid House, Electronica, Disco & Leftfield Pop, the EP is as easy on the ears as it is hard to categorise.

Gleefully eclectic and joyful in nature, it's a perfect introduction to Aili and her musical world, a playful place where anything goes. With the pair currently working together on a new live show it’s to be hoped it won’t be too long before we can all dance together again.
