NuNorthern Soul’s Hints of Ibiza series – a set of eight EPs that come with specially-commissioned artwork from White Isle-based painter Helen Sadler – continues via the second of two EPs from experienced producer, composer, sound artist and mix engineer Marshall Watson (real name Shane Watson).

Like its predecessor, Sunsets on Larkin (Part 2) expertly showcases Watson’s intrinsic grasp of mood and melody, offering a quintet of colourful, quietly evolving soundscapes and slow-motion groovers laden with dreamy chords, sun-baked guitars and hazy, life-affirming aural textures.

‘Evolution’, the EP’s opening salvo, is a neat distillation of Watson’s take on sunrise-ready Balearic music – all yearning chards, delay-drenched jazz guitar solos, undulating bass and relaxed, reverb-heavy beats. ‘Get Out There and Be Somebody’, the track that follows, lives up to the positive message of its title. More groove-based, with deep dub disco bass and mid-tempo Balearic disco beats, the track sounds like a sun-down jam session between Prins Thomas, Jonny Nash and Gigi Masin.

Watson continues to explore the more groove-based side of his work on the similarly chunky, kaleidoscopic and vibrant ‘Standing in Circles’, where a similarly-framed bassline and rhythm track provide the platform for starry electronics, deep space chords, and ear-catching, effects-laden guitar motifs. You’ll find more intergalactic electronic sounds – along with some alien-sounding synth stabs and boogie-influenced synth-bass – on the languid slow dancer that is ‘Hints of Blue’.

Fittingly, Watson has chosen to end the EP with arguably its’ most magical and mesmerizing moment: the near eight-minute wonder that is ‘High Tide’. Reflecting his long-held love of deep house, the track layers lapping waves of sumptuous electric guitar sounds and time-lapsed chord sequences onto unfussy house beats and another chunky, dub-influenced bassline. Whether you dance to it or use it as a soundtrack for post-club wind downs, ‘High Tide’ will worm its way into your subconscious and gently warm your soul.
