New Zealand's Soane was a legend in his home country, as much for his DJ skills as for his larger than life personality.

A former doorman and hip-hop DJ he re-launched himself as a house DJ, honing his craft and becoming a local hero at his residency in the after-hours sweatbox that was Calibre, which still rates as one of our favourite clubs of all time.

It was there that we encountered him for the first time on one of our winter 'Paper' tours. We'd heard the stories of this Tongan DJ who was smashing it and boy were they right; a lasting friendship was forged in the messy late nights and early mornings of Auckland nightlife. Soane went on to make two visits to the UK where he rocked Robodisco, Paper parties and festivals. He also collaborated in the studio with Miles and Elliot plus Dick Johnson and Ben Davis as Troffman for releases on Paper and Shaboom, subsequently releasing his own debut album 'Tongan Chic' of tight funk grooves and house bangers on In Music.

Soane passed away in 2014, leaving a big hole in NZ's dance culture and the lives of his friends and family. We thought it high time to honour him with a compilation to remember the 'Big Daddy'.

Proceeds will be split between his daughter and the NZ Heart Foundation.
