Following a spiritual awakening at a retreat two-and-a-half years ago, the daughter of the late (and great) Eddie Guzman of Rare Earth on Motown Records, Marissa Guzman, was inspired to quit her high-profile marketing career to learn how to produce her first album. Already well-known internationally in the house music scene as an up-and-coming vocalist who hailed from the Detroit metro area, Guzman released her album, "Joy Road," on November 11, 2011, (11.11.11) and has been quickly gaining respect across the board amongst some of the biggest names in house music.
The "Joy Road Remix" album features Guzman's number-one hit with Black Coffee, "Time To Go%u201D which has also recently been nominated for Remix Of the Year at the SAMAs, and also a very special daddy-plus-daughter remix of "Magic Door," a career milestone track for Guzman courtesy of Detroit's talented Pirahnahead, who uses Eddie Guzman's legendary drum loop from Rare Earth's "Happy Dance" and pairs it with Marissa's vocals: a chill-inducing creation, to be sure. Along with remixes from Kerri Chandler, Mr. V, Paul Randolph, Liquideep, Rithma, Demarkus Lewis, Corduroy Mavericks, Vindico Del Quade, Malik Alston, Doc Link, Hallex.M, Ed Mazur and Sugarhouse, this remix album is sailing into home-run territory!
Guzman has always felt very strongly about the importance of using music as a platform to help those less fortunate. As a result, she is graciously donating 50 percent of her album sales to NextAid, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization that harnesses the power of music to support sustainable development projects that serve vulnerable children, youth and women in Africa.
