The writing process for 'Tephra' began with early sonic experiments whilst on my winter retreat in the Canary Islands, playing around with modular gear and beats on the TR8-S. I created a lot of spatial textures by manipulating piano recordings I'd made before my trip away, stretching them out and treating with effects to create ghostly ambience. Unusually, the main melody actually came much later in the process once I was back in the UK and working from home due to the lockdown. I was playing around with my Korg Minilogue XD and the melody seemed to fall from my fingers. It felt so right for the track and my emotions at the time, it was almost as if it had already been written and just needed to be recorded.
