There are some tracks you remember hearing for the first time - when I first heard Vespertine Shroud / Crumbling Dusk, the opening 1-2 from Adventsong's Indaco album, I was standing in the crowd at the Peer Hat in Manchester trying to stave off nerves ahead of my first headline gig. I was tired and tense in a way that doesn't predispose to live performance and it cut through all that, and for 8 minutes I was carried on a tempest over an open ocean, chilled by a uniform blizzard of perfect snow. The moment stayed with me until I heard the recorded versions and was pleased to find they still resonated - I contacted Adventsong about the idea of doing a remix.

The mix itself took inspiration from Donato Dozzy's album-length re-work of the track Vaporware by Bee Mask where he pulled the same original piece apart and reassembled it in 7 different directions. I took the same approach, building ambient washes and granular synth pads out of the original two pieces, then tried to build a four track narrative exploring different ways of reshaping the original sounds.

When I first heard these pieces I heard oceans and storms - the tracks are built to reflect this, a night voyage across an open ocean that roils to the point of sea sickness before the tempest bursts and the elemental assault threatens shipwreck.

Thank you to Adventsong for the inspiration (and the samples), and thank you to Disintegration State for their continued indulgence of my tangents.
