The Afrika EP is Osborne’s third release of new material on Spectral. The title track is one of the best songs we’ve had the pleasure to release. Full of life and atmosphere, it oozes all things raw and natural. Distant voices form a chant, and rolling drum lines are sequenced in a non-traditional grid. “Afrika” is World-inspired without falling into clich? or comfort. It rolls out the speakers in a healthy charge.
The flip’s two techy tunes, “In Gear” and “Graphite”, are drumbox monsters with Detroit’s psyche and Berlin’s step. The descending basslines of “In Gear” define dancefloor havoc, coupled with stabs and tricky disco edits. The rude and absurd “Graphite” has a snorty bass chug—something dirty is happening here. Like its namesake, the metallic texture belies the soul of the piece; so swingy, yet so stern.
