The Other Real EP

Charles Spencer

Loveslap
SLAP028 | 2005-04-05
Hot on the heels of the immensely popular 'Taboo Jazz' CD by David Harness, 'The Other Real' EP spotlights Loveslap head honcho Charles Spencer at the controls for his funkiest, sweatiest, and most musically diverse offering yet. Kicking off with the latinate peak hour stomper 'Even Now', which featured on the 'Taboo Jazz' CD, Charles hits the ground running: fluid latin shuffle beats a la MAW, Charles jamming the Rhodes, and bubbling live bass courtesy Loveslap session veteran Bill Dickens comingle and simmer, building to some positively incendiary flute and sax work. This one's already seeing heavy local rotation and smoking select West Coast dancefloors.

'Chemtrails' (Available on the commercial release) showcases a quirky 'when-moogs-go-bad' key line, jacking Chi-town beats, and cerebellum tickling bleeps that build to a peak, then morph effortlessly into the strings and atmospherics of classic disco for a brief but glorious 16 bars, then just as quick, it's back to the jack. Imaginative, fearless and funky, this cut was swooped up by DJ Heather for her mix for the high profile Fabric Mix CD series.

The title track brings it home. Upfront big bottom kick, chunky drums and percussion, aquatic synth hook, reverb drenched pads, some fine keyboard stylings by Charles, and a simple, insistent, HUGE wall of bass add up to an excellent late nighter, suitable for the hardwood or the headphones.
