Samu

Monog Records
MNG084 | 2020-03-02
Samu returns Monog with the fantastic Like That EP. This one follows his debut, Doop Ba EP, from back in 2018 and we’re delighted to see him back once again. Influenced by his father and late uncle, who worked together in the 80's and 90's during the epic cultural era in Valencia. They co-managed a record label and hosted performances and acts in one of the largest clubs in the world. This behind-the-scene experience taught Samu much about the work and life of a deejay. Passionate about music since a child, the influences of funk, metal, hip-hop, jazz and breaks are present in his productions. But it's techno that constitutes a fundamental piece of his initial works. In 2008 he realized one of his dreams, teaming up as a producer and head of management for the label Novo Music together with his friend Leix. The quality productions and the great feedback from several DJ’s and artists soon boosted the business, with a need to expand over frontiers.

First up we have the Original Mix of Like That which is a sure-fire winner on any floor, thanks to its upbeat nature and funky flavour. Pumping beats lead the way as a deep rumbling bassline works the bottom end. Crispy hats and rhythmic percussions lock us in while distorted spoken vocals add narrative to the sound. Brighter, melodic keys add contrast and make this one a must have no doubt.

DJ, producer Ernesto Ferreyra debuts with us at Monog with a superb remix on Like That. Ernesto travels the world in pursuit of musical enlightenment. Taking his first steps as a radio DJ in his hometown Córdoba, by the age of 16 he becomes a fully-fledged club DJ. He moved to Mexico City and then to Montreal, where he meets Guillaume Coutu Dumont, with whom he records and performs live under the Chic Miniature moniker. On the remix here, Ernesto gets us right into the groove from the off, thanks to a pumping kick drum and well-crafted percussion patterns. A powerful bassline resides on the low-end, propping up the groove effortlessly while bright, plink, plonk notes cut through. Cool, funky keys add that party vibe alongside distant crowd vocals that add to the atmosphere. A real nice groover for the floors.

Step Deseaster intros with a cool rolling drum pattern with rhythmic hats and percussions setting the groove in motion. A deep sub-level bass shores up the low end as groovy keys fade in and out. The track is laced with upbeat funky elements, from the discofied filtered riffs to a superb, short vocal shot that will get the dancing feet shuffling towards the floor. Top-notch stuff that will not disappoint.

Crunchy Mornings delivers a solid slice of deep, techy grooves. A straight up four to the floor beat is littered with nice and chunky kicks and sporadic hats that form into a smooth rhythmic flow. The bassline is joined by a hypnotic sequence that adds depth to the groove as short stabs break through. The track builds and builds into a full-on floor pleaser, not to be missed.
