A well-travelled artist who returns to Particles with an original EP, Frezel steps "Out of the Twilight" with a quintet of tracks that makes for a triumphant debut.
An artist who can trace a passion for dance music back to his techno-loving college roommate in Leeuwarden at the turn of the decade, Frezel has never looked back. Inspired by the likes of Solee, Microtrauma and Olivier Schories, the Dutch producer soon began to find an urge to create his own music. Stifled by a move to South Africa, Frezel ultimately found a way to satiate his desire to release his own production material with impressive results. Since a debut for Experimentalist in July 2013, a double century of production credits has found their way onto a plethora of blue-chip imprints as Frezel forged a name for himself with a distinctive approach to his craft and his own distinctive musical hallmark. "Each track I make is like a page out of my diary…I can never tell what comes out, it's a surprise every time."
Appearances on Steyoyoke's "Perception, Vol. 03" and "Paradigm, Vol. 04" in May and November 2018 saw Frezel mark a significant high point while additional work for Aftertech Records, PHW Elements and Paul Hazendonk's MNL has seen him light up the progressive house, electronica and melodic techno genres with a smattering of deep house and techno thrown in for good measure. A Particles debut remixing Sebastian Busto's "Mankind" in February 2018 now sees the New Zealand based artist return with "Out of the Twilight".
The title track is full of rippling arpeggios that cascade in spine-tingling fashion throughout the seven-minute piece, filtering in and out of audio range alongside sumptuous chord progressions. A huge counterpoint melody bristles through the analogue bassline while ticking percussion and heavy beat add metronomic power. "The Adversary" opens with an intricate percussive groove before a bouncing bassline adds dancefloor prowess. Building in intensity, clever arpeggio sequences fill the left-right spectrum in perfect syncopation with the head-shaking rhythm. White-noise effects add to the sonic collage to create a strong piece.
Collaborative with Tangent and continuing a narrative of twinkling and shimmering arpeggio work, the aptly titled, "Bliss" supplies a rich sonic landscape that varies dramatically with a freeform Moog line that pitches and distorts with Bodzin-style brio to create layers of sound that sit elegantly atop an off-beat percussive groove and hypnotic beat. The darker tones and heavy beat of "Limbo" provides an unnerving opening, but the track soon hits its stride with grooved synth line and rasping bassline that pulsates gently in side-chained fashion. Textured pads swim across the stereo spectrum with ease as a strong lead line makes its presence felt in the third movement. Characterised by a complex and chunky rhythmic framework, "Poetry Slam" sees another flowing lead line sit enticingly in the mid-range as a chorus of spot effects add character and depth. Rising and falling with ease, the track perfectly illustrates Frezel's genre flux.
