Gavin Griffin is an artist with a strong association to the Proton Music label. With his GMJ soubriquet, the Australian artist now returns with the twin-track "Catharsis".

Hailing from the sun-kissed city of Melbourne on the south-eastern coast, Griffin has carved out a sizeable niche with his unique brand of progressive house. Built upon an "innate passion for deep, emotive electronic music", GMJ has grown rapidly in prominence after DJ performances in his home city and beyond has enraptured audiences at the likes of "Rainbow Serpent Festival". Furthermore, studio mixes for the renowned "Balance Music" series and "Future Memory" show on Proton Radio, sees GMJ continue to break down international barriers.

In tandem, a successful production career has shone another spotlight on the Australian's career. Some 300 production credits for a plethora of the finest underground imprints are testament to an unrivalled position at the underground dance fraternity's top table, with work for Vapour Recordings, Balkan Connection and Sudbeat telling their own story of GMJ's continued success. Over 50 of those production credits come courtesy of work for Particles and Proton Music. 2014's debut for the former saw a clutch of original tracks on the "Edge of Remembrance" and "Forgotten Wisdom" EPs, while remixes for Oliver Lieb, Kastis Torrau and Rick Pier O'Neil also hit the Particles headlines. Collaborative work with fellow Melbourne resident, Matter, saw the duo make huge strides together on Proton Music. A 2016 debut saw the "Superposition" EP quickly cement reputations with rich and textured soundscapes, before 2017's "Osmosis" and 2018's "Interscope" EPs continued showcasing the duo's extraordinary talents. Moreover, October 2017 saw GMJ make his solo EP debut with the twin-track "Push Through" which went on to see remixes from heavyweights Juan Deminicis and Andrea Cassino. It is therefore with immense pleasure that we welcome GMJ back to the label with "Catharsis".

Opening with a trademark rolling groove, the title track is a wonderfully ethereal affair that lilts effortlessly across its eight-minute journey. A hypnotic motif paves the way for side-chained white-noise effects to fill the sonic space before a sublime, glassy motif makes its play in the main body of the track. Reminiscent of Isao Tomita, the harmonically rich phrasing shimmers gently as counterpoint motifs and textured pads create a rare aural experience.

Partner track, "Oranai", opens with a reverb-drenched and delay-laden percussive groove as a mesmerising bassline and synchronous mid-range motif create a strong framework. Evolving delicately, pulsating pads, soaring chord progressions and flowing free-form melody, illuminate throughout. Making its mark in the third movement, an additional sustained bassline adds emotion as rhythm and melody combine once more to devastating effect.

Providing a healing touch with his unique and effortless sound, GMJ presents a new musical "Catharsis".
