Different Light

Shelf Nunny

Hush Hush
HH108 | 2018-11-16
Seattle’s Shelf Nunny (aka Christian Gunning) continues to grow, evolve, and craft his own unique and colorful sound on Different Light, his 3rd EP presented through hometown label Hush Hush Records.

Different Light captures a renewed spirit from the introspective electronic producer. His two previous EPs – 2016's Wishful Thinking and 2017's Little Time We Have – provided early glimpses into his whimsical downtempo sonic world filled with lush slow-motion beats infused with a cinematic and frequently melancholic touch. Different Light continues to carry a beautifully textured widescreen sound, yet it now features a brighter and more positive energy. As Shelf Nunny states, "This EP is basically an ode to those moments when you have temporary bursts of hope."

The EP opens with two instrumental pieces, "Hotspring" and "Ravenna," allowing Shelf Nunny's vibrant beats to be placed directly and immediately in the spotlight. With Different Light's more optimistic tone established, the EP segues into "Time To Waste," collaboration with Eugene, Oregon-based vocalist/producer and Hush Hush alum lostodyssey. Shelf Nunny began working more closely with vocalists on Little Time We Have, and "Time To Waste" proves he's made significant leaps on his latest vocal collaborations. Carrying a magnetic, kaleidoscopic, and heavy nostalgia streak, lostodyssey's airy vocals blend seamlessly within Shelf Nunny's playful production, yielding a sentimental radio hit in an alternative technicolor universe.

"Daydream" arrives next, a moody collaboration with skyrocketing Philadelphia rapper/vocalist Zubin, recently hailed by The FADER as "emo-rap's sleeping giant." Boasting a youthful, dreamy, and ethereal R&B/pop sound, "Daydream" finds Zubin embracing Shelf Nunny's brighter energy and riding the glistening beat in hopeful, addictive fashion. It's a song that begs to be placed on repeat while, yep, daydreaming. The EP closes out with the instrumental title track, Shelf Nunny back in the saddle and coolly riding out into a magenta-flooded sunset over crispy drums, woozy synths, and intricate atmospherics.

Over a handful of tracks, Shelf Nunny continues to prove he's one of the Pacific Northwest's most exciting producers, whether he's grinning front and center, or low-key setting the stage for his talented friends to bring their voices out of their bedrooms and into your hearts through his magical musical world. Welcome to Different Light.
