River Aoos is the largest river in the geographical region of Epirus, North-West Greece. The river originates from Mavrovouni mountain (part of the Northern Pindos mountain chain in Greece). It flows in North West direction through Albania and discharges into the Adriatic Sea. In Greek mythology Aous is an epithet or name of Adonis-the mortal lover of the goddess Aphrodite who was conceived after Aphrodite cursed his mother Smyrna to lust after her own father, King Cinyras of Cyprus. She had sex with her father in complete darkness for nine nights, but he discovered her identity and chased her with a sword.
