Th;en and Las Von make a welcome return to ICONYC this week with ‘Emery’. Hailing from Germany and Canada respectively the trio united for their first collaboration in July of this year with a remix of Vanishing Point’s ‘Apocalypsis’. Coming courtesy of ICONYC, the studio synergy was evident and thus the foundation for a solid partnership was formed. A second remix collaboration was unveiled two weeks ago when the trio marvellously overhauled Basil O’Glue’s menacing ‘Griffin’ into a slice of driving progressive house. Now presenting their first original productions, Th;en and Las Von return to ICONYC with a brand new two track EP.

The title track ‘Emery’ begins with a corky kick and an array of impressive drum elements, before a warm, subby foundation eventually drops. Emotive chord changes usher in layers of synth elements as fuzzed out stabs and waves of percussion advance the narrative. Evolving subtly, it’s the main break which brings charm and effervescence to the storyboard, as timely modulation elevates the mood, eventually peaking during a hopeful yet invigorating finale. A soulful cut from Th;en and Las Von.

The companion piece ‘Chevelle’ sits as a worthy complement with its refined musical approach. Much like ‘Emery’, it’s a smooth, effortless slice of emo-progressive. Anchored by warm bass swells it’s choppy percussion adds dynamic flair as the melodic narrative evolves. Offset tones make for a vibrant motif leading into the break, where additional musical layers take you further into dreamland. Never losing sight of the dance floor the duo work an underlying tension through muted kicks as wispy atmospherics fade off into the distance as the groove drops for a euphoric rush. Two brilliant cuts from Th;en and Las Von who may have just staked their claim as progressive music’s most formidable trio.
