John Johnson’s ICONYC welcomes an exciting new artist to the label in Steve Johnson aka Science & Reason with his debut single. The Canadian born, USA based producer came up through Toronto’s burgeoning nightlife with gigs at the city’s legendary System Soundbar. With over a decade of production experience and support from James Zabiela, the stars have now aligned for Science & Reason’s debut single ‘Then Brutus Was Quiet’ alongside remixes from Anakim and Monje.

Steve’s long history in electronic music becomes immediately apparent as ‘Then Brutus Was Quiest’ unfolds. Built around an evolving melodic narrative, it’s both nostalgic and poignant. On a foundation of freeform bass swells comes arpeggiated clusters and processed pianos. Warm and rushy at points yet delicate and impassioned at others, the first act proves to be the prefect prelude to a dramatic break. As the pianos decay a striking tonal theme rises, peaking with a wave of noise and tepid rush of beats and swollen bass. A striking creation from Science & Reason, who with just one production has found a place amongst this years top up and coming progressive house artists.

The remixes both take the track in different and equally inspired directions beginning with Anakim. The Los Angeles based producer is fresh off a release on Deadmau5’s mau5trap imprint while also appearing on Dear Deer in January of this year. Now making his much anticipated ICONYC debut Anakim provides a fresh interpretation of ‘Then Brutus Was Quiet’. The main themes translate quite well over a darker underbelly and tighter rhythmic core, as vibrant chord stabs add bounce and fluidity with each successive loop. It makes for a compelling first act, before a cross cultural theme seals it’s unique appeal during the main break.

The release concludes with one of this years most pleasant surprises in Monje. Sebastián Sellarés aka Monje hails from one on Argentina’s most talent rich regions in Cordoba. His smooth progressive minded sound has become a favourite amongst old and new school fans of the genre, landing him releases on PHW Elements and Massive Harmony Records. Now stepping up for the most anticipated release of his career Monje reworks ‘Then Brutus Was Quiet’ into a deep, emotive piece which rounds the release out on a strong note. From it’s funky, well contoured low end to bubbly arps and scenic soundscapes there is a lot to like here. What’s most appealing though is it’s timeless vibe, there is no affinity to follow any trends, just a musical remix that will stand the test the time. A great interpretation from Monje who is someone you’re definitely going to be hearing a lot more about. John Johnson’s ICONYC continues to showcase a perfect balance of fresh new talent and established, sought after veterans, the former shines here with three up and coming artists who are set for big things.
