Chris Cargo

ICONYC
NYC107 | 2018-10-01
Following a one month hiatus John Johnson's ICONYC returns by welcoming Chris Cargo to the label for his debut single. The Irish artist was an integral part of the progressive house movement that happened in the late nineties. Perhaps best known for his productions on Mara's Choo Choo label, Chris also appeared on Renaissance, Automatic Records and our own Release Records imprint. Following a long absence Chris made a well received return to the scene in 2017 and has since compiled an impressive discography, highlighted by recent releases on Beat Boutique, Juicebox Music, Magnitude Recordings and his own If You Wait imprint. Chris now makes his ICONYC debut with 'Persistence' alongside remixes from Loquai and Galexis.

Although perhaps best known for his dark, chugging creations we see Chris step outside of that blueprint here for a deeper more introspective creation. Dulcet beats, aquatic rumblings and an airy atmospheric resonance become immediately captivating. It's quite easy to get lost in it's mediative drawl but a storyboard of ethereal synths becomes both striking and poignant. In a way, it's a tip of the cap to the countless German artists who have championed this astral synth led sound, most notably Stephan Bodzin.

Progressive House veteran Loquai delivers the first interpretation and provides a great complement to the brilliant original. While staying true to the main theme the Russian born, Germany based artist toughens up the groove and adds his own emotive charm during the main break, as hazy harmonic refrains converge for the ultimate wall of melody and colour.

The release concludes with Galexis making his label debut following releases on Outta Limits and Soundteller Records. The German artist brings a fresh approach to the track with a tight, rhythmic and more modern progressive minded groove. It's elastic-like foundation is bursting with ultrasonic character, adding both drama and tension, perfectly setting up a heart melting main break. A very powerful centrepiece coupled with a classy transition into the third act make this a sure fire dance floor burner. It rounds out a welcome return for John Johnson's ICONYC who is gearing up for a monumental run to close out the year.
