Susurrus

Saultloom

Manjumasi
MAMA014 | 2018-08-20
Release number fourteen on San Francisco's Manjumasi sees the return of Saultloom for his second dedicated artist EP. No stranger to the imprint, Saultloom debuted his new production project on 2017's head-turning Kowtow EP, quickly followed up by the inclusion of "Canoodle" on the Six Swords VA. The new Susurrus EP marks just over one year since that debut, highlighting the continued maturation of his unique sound and artistic voice.

The title track "Susurrus" is a perfect reflection of Saultloom's style: deep, contemplative and mysterious. A tapestry of deep, warm synths create the canvas over which rich washes of atmospherics are painted, creating a moving sonic image that is at once forceful and delicate. The second track "Insula" dives deeper into the depths. An insistent undulating synth slowly but insistently builds in energy over a brooding groove, just before giving way to a haunting and trippy breakdown built around a vocal sample that sits perfectly at the edge of interpretation. Finally, "Take Me Out" rounds out the package with a slowed-down chuggy rhythm and psychedelic washes of abstract organic and vocal elements.
