Top Progressive Artists of 2020
A genre whose original roots lead way back to the UK in the early 1990s, from early pioneers like Leftfield, Sasha and the Renaissance CDs, progressive House has been enjoying a recent resurgence with artists lending a modern take on the sound. It’s our second year officially highlighting the major players of the genre in these lists and we’ve seen that the genre remains popular with old school supporters and new adopters alike. Big players of the game like Anjunadeep, All Day I Dream and Sasha’s Last Night on Earth are flourishing and forging a new space for the sound in the modern dance sphere, and from these label powerhouses we’re starting to see a new generation of stars emerge, including Marsh, Jody Wisternoff, Tim Green and Yotto. This is melodic dance music for the clubs, not the charts.

5. Stan Kolev
Stan Kolev is once again one of our top sellers in Progressive. Last year’s #2 in this list, it’ll be no surprise to see him back in the summary, as both him and his label ‘Outta Limits’ have become go-to destinations for melodic electronic music. 2020 saw the Bulgarian have a number of hits in the genre across a healthy production output in general. His best-selling releases of the year included his moody prog roller ‘Ahimsa’, his ‘Monad’ and ‘Kundalini’ EPs via his own Outta Limits imprint. He also dropped exciting releases via Mad Hatter, Beatfreak Recordings and Enormous tunes and we expect him to kick off 2021 with a bang.
4. Ben Böhmer
A new entry this year, and straight in at number three we have Hannes Bieger. Bieger had massive success this year with his smash hit Poem For The Planet on Awesome Sound Wave (featuring Ursula Rucker) that topped our charts here at Traxsource and is still the current genre #1. A highly sought-after mixing engineer in Berlin, Bieger is already a well-known name in the business, having worked on records for some of the finest names in contemporary electronic music for over a decade. Now focusing his energies more on his own music, we’ve already been treated to an impressive output via like the likes of ZEHN records and fryhide. Standout releases this year were of course ‘Poem For the Planet’ alongside ‘Pele’ and his remix of ‘Into The Dark’ by Spalamp. We expect more big things from the German next year.

Brand new to the progressive end of year list for 2020, our #2 position in the list goes to Rich Vom Dorf. The German had an outstanding year, with multiple top-selling tracks on his own Tächno label and an impressive 4 tracks that made it into our top 100 best-selling tracks for the genre. Important tracks to note this year include ‘All My Friends’, ‘Your Mind’, ‘Feeling the Pain’, ‘Break My Heart’, ‘For Sure’ and ‘The Attraction’ that all dominated the charts at point of release and continued to sell throughout the year. Not resting for a second, Vom Dorf also had a number of late releases via his own label in December this year including ‘So In Love With You’ and ‘Retry’ that we fully expect to see in the charts for early 2021.
Up two places from last year, Anjunadeep golden boy Marsh is our number one Progressive Artist for 2020. Over the past year we’ve watched the young artist transform into one of the most in-demand names in this branch of electronic music and in 2019 he certainly made his stamp on the music world, sharing lineups with the likes of Sasha & John Digweed and tackling some of the world’s finest clubbing venues from London’s Printworks to NY’s Brooklyn Mirage. Moving into 2020, he had another very strong year of successful productions with his label Anjunadeep, including the ‘Lost In You’ and Eu Topos EPs and his collaboration with Nox Vahn on the ‘Come Together’ / ‘Naturish’ release. His ‘My Stripes’, ‘Healer’ and ‘Lailone’ EPs and singles also paved the way for his album of the same name that came out in November, a hotly anticipated release that performed very well on site and perfectly displayed the graduation to Marsh’s new level of artistic ability. Other highlights of the year include 3 tracks in the top100 for Prog, alongside remixing Trance legend Armin Van Buuren and Super8. With Marsh already being heavily backed by the likes of Joris Voorn, Kolsch and Radio 1’s Pete Tong and Danny Howard, we have no doubt he’s in the next generation of dance music stars.
