KID ENIGMA

His name comes from being the baby in the family and having a life due to obstacles; Kid has finally turn his life around.

Keith Rafael Perez AKA Kid Enigma is the youngest of six siblings. His oldest brother used to mix locally in Chicago during the golden years of Chicago house. Although he was sent off to the Navy, he left plenty of mixes behind for young Keith to listen with his older sister Ruby.

From a very early age, Keith paid attention to songs people overlooked. The artists that were raw, hidden gems you could find on numerous tapes.

"When I make CDs, I chose the hottest songs from the artists I love. At that time, you were only able to upload about 15 songs per CD. On a daily basis, I would carry about 6 CDs along with my CD player. This was not a hobby. It was a necessity."

Kid had just graduated from grammar school when he purchased his first pair of plastic turntables that ran on a rubber belt. His brother supplied him with old records. He would repeat, "Keep practicing. Keep listening. It will not be cheap or easy. In the end, it will be worth it."

Every activity Kid was involved (Baseball, Acting, Modeling, Basketball, Video Games, Etc) meant nothing. He would practice in his basement 6 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"Man, I would play the same 10 records daily. The names were stored in my memory."

Kid landed his first residency at a restaurant turned lounge called Cancun. He was introduced to local promoters and DJs. By age 16, Kid made weekly residencies at three different lounges: (Drus, Tini Martini, and Club PM). He would mix popular Hip Hop and Old School House music. He build a local following due to his youth his skills as a DJ.

"My friend Rampage was an awesome DJ. Every scratch or cut he record, I would listen, replicate, and create my signature style."

When he reach 18 and graduates from high school, he team up with his best friend and Co-CEO of B Natural Records Mac 1ne. They began putting out music. They would lay a great amount of tracks. When Kid turned 19 years old, he produce his own music.

"Around the time I produce, I purchase records from J Dilla, Stacy Kidd, 1200 Warriors, Kanye West, Pete Rock, Common, and Musiq Soulchild." I enjoy their technique so I search for those types of records. No one I knew produced this that time. I taught myself.

Kid decided it was time to take his art seriously. He first closes his residencies, builds a cave in his parents' house, upgrade his equipment and stays for 6 hours daily.

"I start singing because I did not know anyone who was serious about music. While my peers were partying and having fun, I would stay in my basement. Every night I would drink Pepsi and eat a bag of chips. It would get me though the night".

While putting out his own music with Mac under B Natural Records, Kid looked for guidance. He found it in legendary House DJ Lego. They began their residency at a lounge on the south side of Chicago. Kid played a few tracks for him. Lego decide to take him under his wing and guide him toward the right path of the House industry. Lego took Kid under his label (Poontin Muzik), and showed him the business side of music.

When Kid attended his first Winter Music Conference, he found it hard to keep his game face. He met the very people that had influenced him. The event was special when he met his mentor Mark Farina.

"When I met Mark, I realize anything can happen. He was humble and cool. He reminded how I want to conduct myself. I always send a big shout out to him."

After learning how to play guitar, piano, and sequence his own music, Kid has only one thing on his mind; win his first Grammy and more after. He also would like to mentor other up and coming artist to win their Grammy.

"Popular music now is crazy. I feel that as we progress as the underground, we can eventually take over the brain freeze in the rest of the world. Good music comes first. Even if it is not mine. But I would gladly jump start the revolution. That is why I am here."
