Whitworth Strut Pt. 2

Monkey Boots

Grass Green Recordings
GGR007 | 2014-09-15
Monkey Boots Whitworth Strut Ep New Zealand label Grass Green's first foray onto vinyl now available on digital. Grass green & Monkey Boots have called on the services of two leaders in their fields at different ends of the experience spectrum.
Greg Wilson has been involved in music for more than 30 years, chiefly as a DJ and producer and is riding the wave of the (new) disco boom. Andy Hart is a relative newcomer, but one who is fast carving out a reputation through his work with the Melbourne Deepcast crew.
Each was asked for a new version of a track from Monkey Boots' number one * Whitworth Strut EP. Each has delivered. And then some.
WHITWORTH STRUT (GREG WILSON VERSION)You don't get the kind of reputation Greg Wilson has earned without knowing what makes a dancefloor tick. The master manipulator's take on Whitworth Strut has been a staple of his sets during the European festival season, generating big interest from his huge Soundcloud following. It's not hard to hear why. Greg has twisted and teased the original into a dancefloor detonator. Less tick, more tick, tick, boom. With a CV that includes a residency at a certain club on a certain street that inspired the title, the outcome was never in doubt. The baggy beats and bass of the original are in place; so too the grabs of guitar and euphoric chords. But what makes Greg's version soar are the subtle splices, effervescent effects and trippy treasures in the mix hidden snippets of sound you sense as much as hear. All combine to create a smooth intensity, an arrangement that ebbs and flows, providing pause for breath before dragging you in again. The disco don has delivered again.
HOLD BACK THE NIGHT (ANDY HART REMIX)
Andy Hart is a rapidly rising star in the disco/deep house firmament. And here he enhances his rep with a remix that radiates hypnotic heat.Filtered disco loops are layered over a loping groove to create a mesmeric mood that further blurs the boundaries between deep house, disco and slomo. The drive comes from shimmering stabs, whipcrack sticks and a smart bassline that starts simply and grows in complexity.Perfectly judged delays, reverbs and panning create a vibe that is at once both aurally intoxicating and aimed squarely at the floor.Looped snatches of vocal are saved for a perfectly paced breakdown while everevolving analogue arpeggios fizz away to keep things moving. It's not easy to craft a remix that complements the original while creating a mood all of its own. The Melbourne Deepcast cofounder has nailed it.
HOLD BACK THE NIGHT (ORIGINAL)
Disco editnotedit mayhem! The Monkey Boots? original is built around a guitar loop that delivers a satisfying, straight up floorfilling groove and a strong vocal. A delay heavy breakdown herald the arrival of a Moogstyle bassline that drives the track into peaktime territory. Bouncy bongos maintain the momentum before string stabs punctuate the final hypnotic phase. Monkey madness
