Geoffrey Oryema's world beat classic Piri Wango Iya gets revisited by gotsoul records. A Uganda native, Geoffrey is now living in exile in France, after tragic events in Uganda's unstable political climate in the late 70's led to the mysterious death of his father (who was then Idi Amin's Minister of Land and Water Resources). As a result, fearing that his life was in danger, he fled his homeland in the trunk of a car. What he took with him is the charm and hereditary gifts passed on through generations of his family, many of who were story-tellers, poets and musicians. Inspired by life experience and a family that encouraged expression through the arts, song and dance, Geoffrey bit the music bug at an early age. After being discovered during a performance at the WOMAD music & arts festival, Geoffrey quickly touched the hearts of music lovers worldwide with his unique blend of traditional african sounds and western pop styling. Piri Wango Iya is an extract from his first album 'Exile', based mostly on Oryema's experiences as a youth in Uganda, and was produced by Brian Eno. It also included contributions from Peter Gabriel on backing vocals and keyboards, and was originally released in the early 90's on Peter Gabriel's legendary Real World Records (notorious for discovering some of the best international musicians & artists in the world music scene). Piri Wango Iya is a song about being passionately in love, when translated from his native tongue, he is singing “…each time I see you my heart drops into my stomach.”

Remixers Rise Ashen, Jephte Guillaume, Boddhi Satva & Trinidadian Deep rise to the challenge and each deliver truly inspired re-interpretations. Rise Ashen's Morning Come remix was the first remix of Piri Wango Iya signed to gotsoul, and also the mix that inspired Mike 'Fu' Fresco (gotsoul records owner) to take this project to his partner jojoflores to consider for release. They released it as a limited edition white label promo and although It was not immediately embraced by many purists in the dep house community, many world beat, afrobeat and nu-jazz heads were tripping on Rise Ashen's remix. Very soon this same remix would be championed by the legendary Louie Vega, a massive supporter of forward thinking quality afro-latin sounds (he even featured Rise Ashen's Morning Come on his MAW IN DA HOUSE mix cd on Defected records).

Rise Ashen's Morning Come remix boasts layers of dubbed out mandolins and ethnic percussion over an intense rhythm section, keeping the traditional afrcan lukeme feel of Geoffrey's original mix intact. For his 2nd mix, the Fossil Fuel rub, Rise takes a lighter, more laid back approach, dropping the marimba for some loungy chords and lighter percs, reminiscent of some of some of his releases on his own imprint Fossil Fuel records. For his remixes, Jephte Guillaume teams up with Creole jazz legends Eval Manigat on vibes (R.I.P.) and Harold Faustin on guitar, and multi-talented percussionist Sami Ben Daka. Jephte and his crew deliver 4 very energetic afro-caribean jazz-laced house mixes, including: the Vibestrumental mix, which features the Eval Manigat on xylophone (Eval's style has been compared to Roy Ayers' by numerous music critics and fans) and guitar Harold Faustin (who once received a standing ovation by none other than George Benson, during the Montreal Jazz Festival) and The Tribal Drums mix which features Jephte and Tunisian born percussionist Sam Ben Dakka (now residing in Montreal, and a percussion shop owner), dropping layers upon layers of vigorous afro-latin percussion down on this 11 minute peak hour tribal journey. Man of the moment, Boddhi Satva, with massive releases like Punch Koko and Stop Jealousy on Vega Records, and Warriors of Africa on his own Offerings imprint, bangs out 4 solid mixes in his signature deep throbbing afro-tech sound mixed with an insanely trippy dose of traditional African sounds (his remixes have been creating a big buzz since this year's WMC), gotsoul's own jojoflores delivers an intense edit of Boddi's Therapy dub. Last but not least, Trinidadiandeep works his magic into a deep dreamy percussive journey, his mix will not dissapoint fans of his tripped out soulful style.

Piri Wango Iya is an essential gotsoul release. This digital only release includes many unreleased mixes that are not available anywhere else.
