Ingen makes his Tribal Waves debut with 'Those Who Know, Know' EP, the fourth instalment for Edinburgh techno imprint.
Kevin `Ingen' Blackwood is a DJ/Producer based in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. His style and sound range from complex poly-rhythms and soundscapes to dark underground tracks. His up and coming Digital and vinyl releases include labels such as, Them London, Dark floor Sound, Combat, Noodles, Nerve recordings, Digital Distortions, Tribal Waves, including remixes for Si Begg, Temper D and Boris Noiz.
`Those who Know, Know` Kicks off with a thumping beat, snappy shakers and crunching tribal percussion setting the tone for the release. The title track is powered by a gut-wrenching bass line, heavily filtered machine noises and repetitive stabs. Ingen builds a hypnotic groove using familiar drum kits (808 & 909) to create a sonic landscape full of peaks and troughs.
Zuni offers up two remixes, the Day Tribe (DT) mix and Night Tribe (NT) mixes. DT opens with a dramatic Detroit synth score. The smooth, intricate pads are fused with a stomping percussive set to create a sizzling futuristic conclusion. Conversely, the NT mix has a deeper vibe - more haunting drone that skirts in and out of the shadows of a post-apocalyptic future.
The B-Side track, `Subway` is a melodic cut, a hypnotic synth pattern set on an endless loop echoes the movement of the underground motion. Attacked by stuttering effects and chopped up with live programming.
Sceptical C carves up `Subway` by creating a darker dance floor version. By sharpening the edges of Ingens synth work, Sceptical C gives Subway a harder sound and a heavier percussive set, make no mistake - it's headed for the underground.
