Golden Age Thinking by Two Armadillos is the debut LP from Giles Smith and the late-Martin Dawson. Originally released as three separate 12's in 2012, the new LP sees the duo add three new, exclusive tracks, which will serve to complete the project for release in September 2013
Since 2007, secretsundaze resident and founder Giles Smith alongside esteemed producer for the likes of Moodmusic and Get Physical, Martin Dawson, had worked together on a number of classy deep house and techno 12s. They had been released on imprints such as Dessous, Buzzin Fly and Four: Twenty and laid out a very musical vision that took its cues from masters such as Larry Heard and Ron Trent. In late 2012, Martin sadly passed away, shortly after the three part EP series Golden Age Thinking had been released to a great reception.
"Martin and i wrote the original 9 tracks over a few weeks spent in Berlin in 2011. We sat on them for close to a year and then decided that we'd like to start our own self-titled label for the same reasons as anyone else does, to retain total control. The title of the album is a quote lifted from Woody Allen's 'Midnight In Paris' referring to someone that lives in the past or is nostalgic. We didn't set out to create heritage sounding tracks but certainly to create tracks that would hopefully stand the test of time. A month before Martin passed away we spent a week together in Berlin and wrote 2 new tracks 'Floating Fast' and 'Black Dahlia' and decided to extend the series, releasing these on a 4th 12" with an old unreleased favourite 'Rollerskate' that we had been playing in our live set. I hope this is a fitting tribute to Martin a dear friend and exceptional talent."
Musically across the 3 separate 12's the idea was to lay down one floor focused track and two more laid back offerings and these built up to make an LP over the 3 parts. The results have lit up clubs, podcasts and DJ record bags for the last year, with frictionless, gliding, smooth and rich house offerings like 'Ronin' and 'Theme" being hailed by many as modern classics. The more laid back efforts, like 'These Feelings' and 'Another One For Larry' packed just as much as a punch, but a more emotive one, with genuinely melancholic pianos and lingering minor notes staying with you long after they had finished spinning.
As the three EPs ' most of them out of stock everywhere ' get recompiled into a full-length release, there have been three more tracks added to the package in the form of the atmospheric, pacy 'Floating Fast', the chordy and dusty 'Roller Skate' and the african, acid vibes of 'Black Dalia' All 3 continue in the fine vein of form of the original album tracks, fitting into the overall playlist perfectly.
