Heart hitting, chest thumping, deepness from the city of brotherly love. House, Gospel, and Soul done with class!
Singer, songwriter, musician, Freedom Hill is yet another of the authentic and soulful artists that have emerged from the City of Brotherly Love over the last decade. Backed by a crack group of talented musicians, Freedom Hill (formally The J.Hill Experience), is committed to showcasing his music within the context of a hard-hitting, live attack. Freedom Hill is a hard-rocking, in-the-pocket ensemble that is equally adept at dropping soul, funk, and rock with their jazz and blues chops on full display. Freedom Hill is currently putting the finishing touches on his first album, an independently produced and released project, which is scheduled for a summer EP release.
Joshua Freedom' Hill was born and raised in a gritty West Philadelphia neighborhood, and his music reflects both the attitude and the diversity of the inner-city experience. His early musical experiences were at the Lamberton middle school, where he learned the trumpet and performed in musical productions like Annie Get Your Gun. He received inspiration from the music of Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Michael Jackson, and Miles Davis. Joshua also benefited from having a professional musician for a father. The senior Mr. Hill exposed Joshua to the wonders of his home studio and recording technology at an early age. As a teenager, Joshuas trumpet prowess afforded him the opportunity to gig with various salsa and jazz ensembles around Philadelphia.
While attending Penn State University, Joshua put the trumpet aside, and picked up the microphone, sat down at the piano, and began to write and perform the stirring soul music he's become known for. When back in his hometown of Philadelphia, Joshua continues to perform original music whenever and wherever possible. Whether it be at The Five Spot, Doc Watsons, Mill Creek Tavern and Nells in NYC are a few of the venues where Joshua has banged out hot sets. Joshua also plays un-plugged sets at various intimate venues around the Philadelphia region.
After several years of performing and life experiences, the music has continued to evolve from conventional R&B. Joshua has come to appreciate the diversity of music as expressed by artists like Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, Marvin Gaye, Beck, and Pink Floyd. Working on the new record, Freedom Hill strives for a multi-cultural sound that incorporates rock, jazz, urban, and Latin. Joshua describes it as Alternative Soul, which he believes is the sound that best reflects where hes coming from today, and will showcase his stories of the soul to the widest possible audience.
